The Knot Has Been Untied but I Gained a Star

Today I made a few changes to the design, reverting some I did a few weeks back1 and making some new.

Most important of all, I’ve decided to let go of my beloved knot — i.e.  — and replace it with a star. I was forced into it, to be precise.2

I am dubious about this change though since geekeries is already quite inspired from [Daring Fireball][df], and the star — i.e. ★ — has been John’s mark for permalinks for years. I’ve been looking at Unicode characters, trying to find one that looks good both on Windows and Mac OS. In the end, I went with the star since it has the best balance in weight, white space and meaning. I feel uncomfortable having copied Daring Fireball that much, but it’s more of a tribute to John’s excellent design than a mere copycat. Or at least I think so.

The second most important change is the addition of a [Twitter account][@gk] to broadcast the new articles and links I post here. More and more people are using Twitter over RSS feeds, so it should be a welcomed change. Moreover, I’ve noticed that Google Reader has a couple hours delay — around 12 — before catching with my feed. Following the Twitter account, either in the timeline or in a list, should alleviate this issue for those that live on the edge.

Lastly, I have changed the favicon to stick to the new permalink glyph.

  1. After much thought, I feel like I shouldn’t have made the whole sidebar transparent. Navigational content shouldn’t get in the way, yet it must not be hidden either. The balance is restored.

  2. Indeed Microsoft Windows does not have the required font — the Hiragino family — that brings this peculiar character to the Mac.
