Prometheus
You know I’ve been dying to see Prometheus ever since it was announced. Last week, I went to the movies with some friends and we watched the film in 2D. I was so thrilled.
However, at the end when the screen turned black, I felt disappointed. Not in the this movie’s shit kind of way, more like I was expecting a lot more.
Indeed, the teaser and the couple trailers were so well-made and awesome that I expected the movie to be every bit as good.
My mistake was in seeing the trailers. For Inception, I made sure to read or see nothing that could spoil me. Hell, I didn’t even know the plot or the cast before seeing the movie. And I was delighted. One of the best movies ever made, and certainly amongst my favorites now.
The trailers are made to attract moviegoers; therefore they are carefully edited to show the best footage, the most breathtaking special effects, the most action, etc. You name it! The soundtrack was the absolute best thing of the trailers, creating such a mysterious, horrorific atmosphere that left me wanting more.
So I was disappointed. That’s not to say that the movie was bad; it was great. I loved it.
Spoiler alert.
As I said on Twitter, my main gripes have to do with the editing. Some scenes feel rushed in, or are awkwardly place between two others that have absolutely no connection. I mean, how would you react if an android tells you you have an alien baby in your chest, then you try to take it out? Absolutely complacent, to the point of going along with on an expedition with said android? Certainly not.
However, where this movie truly shines is in its plot. Its lore.
I’ve caught a few references myself — Prometheus (the god), Christmas and the newborn, the lifegiver, volountary sacrifice for the greater being, etc. — but not as much as @cavalorn did.
I invite you to go read his essay, it truly is a great piece on the matter and explains many things.
Lastly, as recommended by many on the Internet, the movie is even better the second time. Like every Ridley Scott’s, and like good wine, the older the better.
