Les Misérables

The last musical I’ve seen was CATS. I was young and didn’t know better. I hated it.

I’d seen The Nutcracker a few years earlier, and while it was much more pleasant, I can say for sure I don’t like musicals. Not one bit, no sir!

So why in hell was I decided to watch Les Misérables? By fear to die stupid, as we say.

All in all, it was OK. You see, I’m French so I know my History. I also know my classics, and as such I’ve read Victor Hugo’s novel. The musical does do it justice. It’s a bit too romanticized, but that’s the kind of things to expect nowadays…

However, as far as singing goes, while I appreciate the fact that the actors were all singing with their own voice, or so it seems, they don’t sing too well. Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe are the most obvious example, as they have their fair share of singing throughout the movie.

However, Amanda Seyfried (of In Time fame) sings beautifully. She literally gave me the shivers each and every time. There’s something about her voice and the gentle tremolo that is truly angelic and worth listening to.
