Blink Rendering Engine for Chromium
Google’s open source Chromium project is forking Webkit and will use its own rendering engine, Blink.
Note that we are talking about Chromium and not Chrome, but I think Blink will soon find its way to Google’s flagship browser.
Is it a good move? It certainly is for Google, and it will hurt Apple the most. But I think the web will lose in the process. Contrary to the dark times of Internet Explorer dominance, the days of a single rendering engine governed by a standards committee are much brighter for the web and the users. Going back to multiple rendering engines, each competing in their own ways and each pushing its parent company’s interests is a bad move.
I can’t shake the feeling that the move is much more motivated by business matters than the official statement make it appear.
